  16. prominent activist in the Fatah faction of the Palestine Liberation
  17. Organization; by two masked gunmen; in Gaza City. Saftawi was
  18. an intermediary between the P.L.O., Israel and Egypt during
  19. the negotiations for the Palestinian autonomy accord. In an
  20. indication of how profoundly circumstances have changed in the
  21. Middle East, P.L.O. and Israeli officials both eulogized him.
